The Association of American Railroads was handed a legal blow Monday when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the group in a case about whether Amtrak has too much clout in setting regulations for the railroad industry.
In a unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court overturned a lower court decision finding that Amtrak is a government entity and not a private corporation, according to Reuters. The association was challenging a federal law giving Amtrak a central role in setting regulations that all railroad carriers must follow.
However, the ruling was not a complete loss to AAR because the justices left open the possibility that further litigation is needed to examine possible constitutional problems with Amtrak's unique role in the industry.
AAR has not yet issued a statement following the ruling.http://reut.rs/1EQAaTP
